How estrogens protect from Covid-19?

It is widely reported that men are more likely to suffer from more severe symptoms and are more likely to die from COVID-19 than women. But why?
Why are men more susceptible to COVID-19 than women?
Men and women respond differently to many viral infections, including influenza, SARS, and MERS. COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, also appears to affect men more than women.
Early research showed that men are three times more likely to die from COVID-19 than women. A study in Ontario, Canada also found that although more women were tested for the coronavirus, men were more likely to test positive and had higher rates of hospitalizations, hospitalizations and deaths.
Could estrogen have a protective effect against COVID-19?
The differences between male and female responses to viruses are likely due to a combination of factors, including genetics and sex hormones.
Researchers have suggested that the female sex hormone estrogen may play a particularly important role in protecting women from diseases like COVID-19. (Although estrogen is generally considered a female hormone, men also produce estrogen, but at much lower levels.)
Research has shown that blocking or removing estrogen increases the number of inflammatory cells in the lungs, which makes them more likely to have severe disease effects.In addition, researchers from Wuhan, China measured estrogen levels in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and found that women with low estrogen levels tended to have more severe COVID-19 than women with higher levels of the hormone.
What about postmenopausal women?
We know that the risk of dying from COVID-19 increases with age. And female sex hormones, including estrogen, gradually decline as women go through menopause. As a result, older women often have low estrogen levels.
So what does this mean for their immunity and COVID-19 risk?
Menopause can affect women’s immunity to COVID-19.
Interestingly, the increase in COVID-19 symptoms with age in women occurs earlier than the increase with age in men, suggesting that estrogen has a protective effect against the disease at an earlier age.
How does estrogen protect against COVID-19?
“Estrogen is everywhere – it’s probably found in every cell in the body, and it can have important effects on the immune system.” For example, estrogen affects the number of immune cells produced and influences the response to infection.
If our immune system cells don’t respond properly to a pathogen, they produce chemicals called cytokines, which are good because they kill viruses, but then they can get out of hand and damage tissues.
Estrogen is believed to regulate the immune response by providing a proportional response from immune cells and preventing overreactions to infections such as COVID-19 that can lead to cytokine storms. If estrogen can weaken the immune response to COVID-19, prevent a cytokine storm and reduce severe symptoms of the disease, this could indicate potential treatments for COVID-19.
